Do you tip the amount before or after a coupon at a restaurant?

restaurant coupon
Captain Howdy asked:

So if I went out to eat and my total was 25 dollars and I have a coupon for $5 off do I tip based on the amount of the meal being $25 or $20 after the coupon?

Your tip should be based on the full amount. The server does not get a percetage of a coupon

  2. whateverbabe says:

what ever the total comes to after, is what they expect to be tipped on….15%

Before the coupon, the server has to work just as much for the tip as they would without the coupon, don’t stiff the server or you might not get good service next time.

Always tip based on the full amount. The waitress should not be stiffed because you have a coupon.

Ive always tipped on the total before the coupon, and I always tip 20% unless my drink was not kept full.

I always tip the amount before the coupon. Most waiters/waitresses make less than minimum wage, so they depend on their tips. In fact, if the service was very good often times I’ll put whatever I’d saved with my coupon into the tip as well.

before…..the coupon is actually paying part of the full bill….

  8. BooBooBren says:

As tempting as it is to tip AFTER, the waiter/waitress doesn’t have to provide you with discounted service just because you want more bang for your coupon!

  9. Kimmy Kandde says:

You tip on the price before the coupon-the $25 amount

  10. Mrs. E says:

I would say for the actual amount you are paying, considering the tip is based on a percentage of the amount of the check (actual amount you are paying).

It’s supposed to be before the coupon.

  12. KGB9108 says:

BEFORE. THE WAIT STAFF DEPENDS HEAVILY ON THOSE COUPONS. THE COUPONS ARE FOR THE RESTAURANT, NOT THE WAIT STAFF’S SALARY.

  13. Sarah says:

I would definitly tip using the full amount.

Absolutely tip based on the amount of the check before any coupons/discounts are deducted. In your scenario, tip for the $25.

  15. ♥TayLee♥ says:

The whole amount of the bill.

Please please please please, I beg of you, tip on the Pre-Coupon amount!! As a server and a bartender myself, when someone gets a portion of the bill taken off and then tips on the discounted portion it only makes me mad because I am not making money on the part that was discounted. I am responsible for giving a portion of tips to the host and the bartender and depending on the discount, some of that may be taken into account for when I have to give out money at the end of the day. Remember, most servers and bartenders make MUCH less than minimum wage, we rely on those tips to make ends meet!!

    Before the coupon.

I know it’s tempting to tip after… but… I’m a server, we make $2 per hour (it’s all taken on taxes!) we still have to claim tips according to before the coupon. If your server was good tip him or her according to their service and the number of people in your party. If they were bad… very little or none.

Could “whateverbabe” and “Mrs E” please not go out to eat if you plan on being a crappy tipper?

Please tip on the price before the discount. Thank you.
